Worried About Social Security? An Expert Provides Answers

August 27, 20261 min read

In 2025, more than 73 million Americans received benefits from one of Social Security’s programs, with 52.6 million counting on it for their retirement income.

Yet projections from the trustees of Social Security show that, beginning in 2032, the trust fund that pays retirement and survivor benefits will be able to pay only 78% of the money owed recipients.

What will happen between now and then is an open question. Will Congress move to fix Social Security? Will the needed reforms reduce future benefits or involve raising the age at which seniors reach full retirement age, now 67?

To get some answers, I spoke with Shannon Benton, executive director of The Senior Citizens League and expert on Social Security.
